OSX Lion Preview slow to start

If you as me is running OSX Lion, and find that Preview is incredible slow to start, and for some reason it also load all the previous seen files, well then welcome to the new "Resume" feature which Apple have introduced.

I like it for some programs, but with Preview it slowed it down so much that making a cup of Tea comes into mind.

One way is to switch off the whole "Resume" feature, or just for a single program;

  • open terminal

  • defaults write <preference file> NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

Or via the System Preferences -> General -> "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" remove the check mark.

So to switch that feature off for Preview :

  • open terminal

  • defaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

To switch it off for the whole system:

  • open terminal

  • defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

This was exactly what I needed! I hated this feature anyway! If I wanted something open, I'd open it! :P

Hi, another solution: don't quit Preview

If you quit preview while using it (using CMD-Q), the app takes *a long time* to startup the next time you need it.

Instead, just close the window of the document and go do something else. Preview will appear to quit once it loses focus. But I think it's still there, hogging memory, because it's quick to use the next time.
