AppleTV version 2

According to [stag]Mr. Jobs[/stag] people want:

  • Hollywood movies & TV Shows
  • Everything in HD
  • Lower prices for content
  • Don’t want a computer
  • Don’t want to manage storage
  • Don’t want syncing
  • Silent,cool & small

I am sorry, I could not care for most of these things, I want to be able to stream content from a NAS device, or just a normal file server, or if I really have to from a shared folder on my desktop computer. I do not care if I had to install some software, use Samba, NFS, or AFP – but I want to be able to stream content from a system which does not have to run iTunes, and I would like to be able to use codecs which are not h.264, and support for VIDEO_TS would be really nice.

Yes I really like Apple products as they in many cases works, but this is not really what I was looking for.

Sorry Apple, but this is absolutely stupid….

BTW. the case looks like one of the similar devices which is currently available in my local MediaMarkt

Dumb Drivers

[stag]Dump Drivers[/stag], well I spend on average 25.000km on the road every year and am starting to get the understanding that the general traffic law have been disabled or rendered invalid for about 40% of everyone who walk, bicycle, drive a mopet, motorbike, car, or a truck.

As I’m currently is a resident of [stag]The Netherlands[/stag], my general rant is pointed towards people of the origin of that country, not saying that things aren’t any different anywhere else, but that is for other people to comment on.

Some of my issues with people in general are:

pedestrians:

  • red light actually mean that you should not cross the street
  • do not walk in the middle of the street, that is unhealthy

bicyclers:

  • still this thing with red light is still a small issue
  • these white things on the road which look like shark teeth actually mean that you should not drive out in front of an oncoming vehicle
  • there is also a reason why it is a good thing to have lights on when it’s dark, other people could not care less if you can’t see where you’re going, but it’s really nice to see that you’re there
  • pedestrian only streets, actually mean pedestrian only streets. Not bicycles, and pedestrians
  • bicycles are not allowed to drive beside each other… you’re taking up space which is meant to be used for other important things, like me

mopet’s

  • they should all be banned…

motorcycles:

  • you’re not Valentino Rossi!!!
  • you’re not Valentino Rossi!!!
  • you’re not Valentino Rossi!!!
  • you’re not Valentino Rossi!!!
  • and no your new 120db exhaust does not sound great at 3am
  • be my guest kill yourself by driving like a madman, but do it somewhere else

[stag]car drivers[/stag]:

  • you might be intelligent enough to get a license, but that does not mean that you should drive a car (very common in The Netherlands, where the common IQ for car drivers must be close to 0
  • you know that there is a reason why cars have indicators
  • you should then also know that it’s polite to use these indicators
  • and when you finally get around to use the indicators, then use them more than once
  • changing lanes on the motorway, is actually the same as entering a road (like an intersection), other traffic have right of way, and remember the indicators
  • overtaking on the right is not allowed!!!
  • there might be an option to drive in the right lane… MOVE!!
  • motorway speed is more than 50km/h
  • and no you cannot break in corners, it’s stupid, and it’s dangerous
  • red light means STOP!
  • please do not enter an crossing if you cannot clear it before red light…

truck drivers:

  • no, you cannot overtake that other truck within reasonable time…….
  • try not to push other people of the road when you decide to change lane…. POLISH idiots!!

What amazes me the most is that people actually are not embarrassed but there misconduct in the traffic, it’s like everyone is allowed to do as they fell like. Someone told me some years ago that the Dutch have two national sports, one of them being football (which they are not very good at, looking at the results from the last world champion ship), and the other one being behaving like idiots in the traffic.

There is a television program; “Weg Misbruikers”, where they show all the stupid things people do while commanding a motor vehicle – the scary thing most of the people being stopped think it’s very funny – what’s wrong with people….

The Germans have a saying about the [stag]Dutch[/stag]: “schwartzer schrift auf gelber rand belief gefern und bleib gesund”, which more or less means that if you see a car with Dutch numberplates make sure to seek cover, otherwise you might be in trouble.

I also sometimes do silly things, but in general I do my absolutely best to follow the law, that way one does not have to worry about the policy… and if something happens it’s not my fault.

Books in Order or Not

Someone I know always get a nervous break down (or close to) when he sees my [stag]books[/stag]… Ok, back to the explanation.

I read books, lots of them, and as I figured out many years ago, it’s cheaper to buy them, than to pay the fines at the library when I return them to late. Also I like the idea about having books… Years ago I saw an interview with a language geek who taught people in Hollywood English dialects who said; “Home is where you put stuff, while you go out to get more stuff”, for me stuff is equal books, and CD’s (music, and my CD’s are also a mess).

Now for some years I was able to keep the book in more or less alphabetic order, but as space is a luxury, and bookshelves are a premium I ended up having to have 3 layers of book, and simply ended up just putting the last read book where there is space. This is fine as long as one can remember where a specific book is – within a row or two… But as I got more and more books this system started showing some faults; I started buying more than one copy of the same book (they all went to a home where they are loved), and finding a book for a re-read became something which doesn’t take 10 minutes, it’s more like an hour (or it feels like it).

I at some point got this library software (Delicious Library) and got all the books into it, but that does not help finding them, yes it helps when it comes to buying duplets or triplets, but not finding the physical book.

So I’ve been thinking, alphabetic humm good idea, but then again that would be too simple, author by country, continent; could be, or just release date/year – much better, and probably for me easier to remember;-) Or some obscure way, like John Cusack did with his records in High Fidelity (which I can’t remember).

One thing for sure is that having too many books can never happen.

“You know”

[stag]“You know”[/stag], actually I don’t, which is why I’m listing, if I did I would be doing something else, like reading a book.

It seams that an American add-on to the English language have been spreading to the rest of the civilized world; most sentences are littered with “you know” as if the interviewer know exactly what the person they are talking to is thinking, and so it would seam the people who are watching, or listing to the radio.

Please stop using useless terms, in this case “you know”, it makes you look as if you actually do not know how to form a sentence appropriately. And, even more, look like you actually do not know what you’re talking about.

Control Firefox memory consumption

[stag]Firefox[/stag] has become a memory hog, it will do it best to use all the memory available, or so it seams. I sometimes see that Firefox uses more than 1GB Ram, which will grind my computer to halt, or make everything else very slow.

According to this, there is a simple way to make sure that Firefox doesn’t use too much memory.

  • Use the configuration editor (url: about:config)
  • Find ‘browser.cache.memory.enable’ and change it to ‘false’
  • Add ‘browser.cache.memory.capacity’ as an integer, and set it to 4096

Restart Firefox, it should not behave itself.

Markus Heitz – The Dwarves & The war of the Dwarves

Lately I’ve been reading way to much [stag]fantasy[/stag], mostly do to the fact of not enough good [stag]science fiction[/stag] available, but also because there is actually some good fantasy out there.

Markus Heitz – The Dwarves & The war of the Dwarves are the first two books in a series of 4, the last two have not yet been translated from German.

Short: we follow a dwarf; Tungdil who is a blacksmith through some pleasent and very unpleasent things, and as this is fantacy everything ends in a very pink way.

Both books are good for a weekend on the sofa.
