OSX X11 Keyboard issues

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 |

There is a small issue with the “default” keyboard setup in OSX X11 (Leopard), after having had this issue for some time I finally decided that I needed to have this fixed.

And found a post which pointed to “/usr/X11/share/X11/xkb” as being the issue, and yes after renaming it:

# sudo mv /usr/X11/share/X11/xkb /usr/X11/share/X11/xkb.orig

Everything is working…. grrr

iPhone Push Notify Applications

Monday, July 13th, 2009 |

Just a quick question, did you unlock your iPhone?

If you can answer yes to the above, then do not buy any Push Notification Application, as it seams that Apple is blocking these phones from receiving notifications – more here

Now how about the phones bought in Italy, or Belgium which already are unlocked, but are used on non-approved carriers by Apple, will they work, or is it the “activate” thing one should do in iTunes which is the whole secret to this…

One day someone might figure out how this works….

To “Netbook” or not to “Netbook”

Monday, July 13th, 2009 |

There have been quite a buzz about the Netbook syndrome, there is Asus, MSI, Acer, Dell, and possible other brands which have come up with a notebook which is build around the Intel ATOM processor and ~1GB ram, and eiter a SSD or a harddriver. The screen is ~9 – 10″ with a resolution of 1024×600′ish.

Now I’ve been looking at these things for a while, and ones in a while I’ll have another look, and everytime I decide against them as they a way to underpowered for what I need them for (well that is not correct), as I normally use a MacBook Pro (unibody) which even for what I use it for sometimes is underpowered.

Also I do not want a Linux nor a Windows netbook, I want one which officially runs Apple OSX!!!

But now, the rumors have started again for an Apple Netbook, this latest incarnation is a “Netbook”, but it’s also a tablet….

More about it here

In short, I would like one of these…..

Internet or not Internet

Saturday, March 28th, 2009 |

So I decided to drop my very expensive internet subscription (depends on how one looks at things), and change to a cheaper one…. Everything went according to plan, and I got a new line (use to have a cable modem).

2 weeks into the whole thing my modem died, and I was told that I would get a new one, so far so good, getting home today from shopping and there is a letter, saying that I’ve canceled my internet subscription… WHAT!!!!

8 minutes later on a 900 number (why do I have to pay for them to help me…), and I’m being told that they sometimes send the wrong letter when they replace the modem, and funny enough it causes a few raised eyebrows.

So I went from UPC, to Alice.nl, and if I’d known about the quality of services, the speed which I pay for (20/1Mb/s) and what I get… I would have stayed with UPC….

Silly me

Apple have discovered vCards

Friday, March 20th, 2009 |

The new thing is that Apple have finally discovered that vCards is use full, and can be used to replace Rolodex cards.

That is according to this “Apple Pro Tip”. Now one can hope that they also can figure out that sending vCards via SMS is also a great thing, and will include this feature in the upcoming iPhone OS v3 which is supposed to be released later this year.

Apple Cinema Displays and the missing button

Friday, February 6th, 2009 |

So you’re asking yourself; what is he on about this time. Well if you don’t have either a Apple Cinema Display (ACD monitor) or an Apple iMac you will never understand….

Steve Jobs in his wisdom, have decided that you do not need a button to switch off the monitor… it is enough to switch off the computer.

Lucky enough after some searching (gotta love Google) I found the magic key combination: Control-Shift-Eject (The key that ejects discs) will switch off the display on Macbook (Pro), iMac’s, and the ACD attached to either your Mac Pro, or Macbook (Pro).

Now, if someone could explain to someone at Apple, that a on/off button on a display is a very very nice thing to have…
