The world in ruins….

Sunday, November 30th, 2003 |

I remember that a few years back I saw a documentary on TV about kids in South America, which as always takes me aback. Now this week I saw something on I think on BBC World about a program which is setup by Ex. Reuters photojournalist Nancy McGirr, and this was about the same program.

The program I talking about is fotokids.org this is a program to which is trying to provide kids (from 7 – 19) a way to document their lifes, and the world around them.

I feel it kind of difficult to explain why it always make me think that we in the developed world sometimes forget that there is something going on outside our little wonderfull (pink) way of life which we cannot understand – except if we go there, which most of us would prefer not to.

Just to change the subject; another thing which always make me smile are tree’s – I don’t know why, but it probably have something to do with my fascination about age. Not that I mind much that I’m getting older (aren’t we all), but imagine there are tree’s which are so old that they can remember ages where mankind hit eachother in the head with stoneclubs. Yes I’m a treehugger, and I’m not afraid of admitting to it – if you don’t understand me, take some time and sit under a tree on a sunday afternoon – you can bring a book, be very very ashamed if you don’t get it after that. But to come back to the issue at hand; Some people finally discovered that the rainforest in the South Americas are disapearing, they started the The Rainforest Foundation which is trying to stop the exploitation.

I know that there are otherthings which are important – but kids without a furture and an earth without trees, do not really give us a chance to survive as a species…

Messenger

Thursday, November 27th, 2003 |

I don’t know when this started, but sometime back in the happy 80′es someone had this wonderfull idea that it should be possible to anoy other people when ever they wanted, actually I think it was AOL – and they sat down and wrote an application which everyone should have on their workstation, and it was a must that it was running, and they had an internet connection (permently active!!). The name of that program is AOL Messenger – yep you guessed it – I really dislike it most of the time, that is as long as I can use it to anoy other people I’m quite happy – it’s just when they interrupt me in my work it goes wrong.

Well some year later, or was it earlier (we will probably never know) someone figured out that cell phones could be used to other things than to call people (as no one had the money to talk for hours on these beasts) – you now had the option to send short messages – this was then called SMS (the last S is Service). I actually like it, the same way as I like AOL Messenger (or others of the same type), but at some point in my life I got to the point that: a) God made the woman out of a male rib (as we know he was called Adam, and she was Eve), b) Someone gave the cell phone to women (and it didn’t take long for the women to figure out that it was way to expensive to talk for hours on it – as they like to do), c) Someone invented SMS…. I really like a) and b), but c) is a big no, no.

I really like to be told that I’m needed, and so, but frankly it can get to the point where it is too much.

BTW: There is now I don’t how many diffrent implementation of Internet messaging services, even MS has one (which is know for being good for viruses), and some are used for telling you that someone would really like you to visit this website (…).

And even I depend on some of these programs, as I said I really like to anoy other people once in a while.

CD protection rant

Saturday, November 22nd, 2003 |

One of the few things which really gets to me these days, is CD copy protection
I buy a fair amount of CD’s and would like to be able to listen to them on my iPod, and on my SliMP3, which is starting to get complicated.

Lately I bourght the new Radiohead and Kosheen albums from Amazon (.de), I spend a few hours trying to rip them to MP3′s …. not possible.

I do normaly not break laws, and I think (my oppinion) that I paied for this album, and should be able to play it on any device I own.

I would not mind to be able to buy music online – but the services which are currently available, do not allow to either play the music on diffrent devices, or you’ll have to have Microsoft Mediaplayer version latest, or what ever….

The music industry took a very big gun and blew their left leg…
